Kia Windshield Care Tips

It’s easy to take your Kia’s windshield for granted, but without the proper care, it can quickly turn your peaceful winter wonderland drive into a nightmare. Snow and ice build-up put extra pressure on your windshield and put your wipers to the test, so it’s important to stay vigilant to protect your visibility and the integrity of the glass. The last thing you want is to leave a crack unchecked and have your windshield shatter in the extreme cold! Not only is this incredibly dangerous, it’s expensive too, and puts your Kia out of commission at the busiest time of the year until you can have the glass replaced. Keep reading as the team at Lally Kia shares our top windshield hacks for safe driving all winter long!

Top 5 Ways to Protect Your Windshield

Don’t buy into the myth that boiling water will help you clear ice fast. The truth is, you’ll just add more ice to the equation and risk cracking your windshield. Not to worry; Lally Kia’s experts have got 5 easy hacks to keep your windshield clear this winter:

  1. Invest in a Windshield Cover: A good windshield cover is your Kia’s best friend in the winter, as it stops snow and ice from building up on the glass. It also keeps your cabin just a little bit warmer until the heater can kick in. If nothing else, get yourself some wiper covers to stop them from sticking to your windshield.
  2. Get a Good Quality Ice Scraper: Another wintertime must-have. Your windshield wipers will get torn to shreds by ice, so it’s important to get in there first with a scraper and sweep the ice away.
  3. Start Using De-icing Spray: When used in combination with your Kia’s onboard heater and a good ice scraper, de-icing spray helps unstick and break up ice that’s crusted to your windshield.
  4. Inspect/Replace Wipers and Washer Fluid: Once your windshield’s free of ice, your windshield wipers can work to keep your visibility clear. Make sure you keep your washer fluid topped up (and your nozzles clear) to help them glide over the glass. Better still, invest in some specialized winter wipers, which are better insulated against freezing temperatures and implement a rubber wedge to sweep away snow.
  5. Treat Cracks Promptly: In the event your windshield does get cracked, make sure you get it seen by a specialist right away. Temperature fluctuations make winter very intense on cracks, meaning they’ll become bigger, more expensive problems faster than in milder months.

Your Quick-Start Guide to De-Icing Your Windshield

Let’s put those hacks into practice! Grab your coat and let’s de-ice your Kia in 3 easy steps:

  1. Warm Up Your Cabin: Start your engine and let the cabin warm up. This step is especially easy if you have remote start controls on your Kia, as your heater will start working on that hard layer of ice while you finish getting your coat and boots on. Bonus is, you can climb straight into a nice cozy car after contending with all that cold.
  2. Scrape and De-Ice: Your standard wipers aren't designed to handle solid ice or heavy frost all by themselves. Invest in a high-quality de-icing spray and scraper to clear the glass, and help your wipers move freely without catching or sticking. Don't forget to clear snow and ice from your roof and hood as well!
  3. Check Your Fluid Nozzles: Make sure your washer fluid nozzles aren’t frozen or clogged. A quick blast of de-icer and a small pin can be used to easily clear any obstructions and ensure your fluid sprays correctly.
